[ When Jesse does eventually wake up and get his wits back about him at the end of the month, the gift goes a long way in putting him in a better mood. Oh, he'll have fun with these alright. ]

[There's a box on the doorstep. A box wrapped in bright red foil, a silky silver ribbon tied around it with a bow on top. Inside the box is a new cowboy hat in black, plus some fresh apples wrapped up in terry cloth. On top of the pile is a simple piece of white cardstock paper with elegant cursive words penned in red ink (notice a pattern?), as if written with a quill or a fountain pen.

Who could have sent it? Well, all that red looks a lot like the red a certain someone likes to wear, right?]

[ The package in shimmering silver paper is a little crudely wrapped - what's inside is oddly shaped. Someone wasn't able to do a good job here but it's certain that an attempt was made - that's the main thing isn't it?

Hidden within is a small, hand-carved deer - no bigger than the palm of an average human hand. Much like the wrapping paper, the figure is a little on the crude side: there's nothing startlingly expert in the craftsmanship. But someone's clearly taken their time to carve the little deer and tried their best - even the roughest edges have been sanded down a little. Eyes, noses and hooves have been coloured with a black marker.

With the deer, a small, simple note that reads: ]

[ It's too bad that Chloe isn't around to see Jesse open the gift. His laugh fills the house with a warmth it hasn't seen in a good few months, and the painting gets a place of honor on the wall in the front room. ]

[ It's a real pain in the ass to want to drink, but not wanting to drink alone. Especially when the two people she would normally have gone to are not particularly high on her list of those she wants to be speaking to at the moment. While she'd been good about making acquaintances, she wasn't sure that any of them were really capable of holding their own against her with a bottle of whiskey, and most of them didn't even seem old enough to drink. Why did this place kidnap so many damned children?

It was all those unfortunate predicaments that had led her to Jesse's door with a bottle under her arm, lifting her hand to knock, hoping he was actually at home. What if he was with his girlfriend? Ugh.

She probably should have texted first. Oh well. ]

[ There’s the sound of several locks being undone before the door opens, revealing a rather rumpled and puzzled-looking McCree. Despite what some people may think, he doesn’t keep the full cowboy garb on all the time. Currently, he’s sporting a pair of gray sweatpants and a reddish-orange t-shirt, half tucked-in. His hat hanging on a hook by the door.

He’d looked out the window before opening the door- of course, he knows better- so he’d known it was Moira on the other side. There’s a question in his eyes that he doesn’t ask as he leans against the doorframe, glances down at the bottle, then back up to her face. ]

Hey.

[ He lets the word sit there, totally inadequate and leaving more than enough room for something else to fill the silence after it. Like an explanation, or at least some clue as to what’s going on. Surely this can't be just a social call...? ]

March 12th!!

[ Given how wasted he'd looked at the end of the night, Chloe was going to safely assume it wasn't likely that McCree was going to be an early riser the next day. She, however, had had one amazing bout of insomnia, waking up after only a few hours of sleep, and being raring to go at a much more reasonable hour than her usual twelve thirty in the afternoon wake up time.

It's what's got her in front of his door at roughly eight in the morning, a coffee in each hand and some donuts tucked in a bag under her arm. Being the ever so polite adult that she was now, she uses her heel to kick at the door a couple of times with a relatively loud thud each time. ]

Hey, McCree! Open up, it's story time!

[ Chloe had guessed 110% correctly about Jesse’s sleep schedule. He hasn’t gone that hard, accidentally or on-purpose, in a long time. A fact his entire body seems intent on reminding him of as he struggles up towards wakefulness. The sound of the front door rattling on its hinges has him groaning and attempting to bury himself even deeper beneath the covers, at least right up until he realizes who is giving him this wake-up call.

Jesse answers the door in plaid pajama pants and the same shirt he’d had on the night before, unbuttoned and wrinkled from sleep. It’s also plaid. An entirely different variety. ]

How are you awake?

[ He sounds honestly a little in awe of that fact as he waves her in, morning sunlight glinting off of his metal hand. ]

[It's a small package that arrived on Jesse's doorstep. But inside...

He's seen them before.

The silver necklace he gifted Rei for Christmas. And the silver necklace with a silver ring, sized for a man, that she always wore.

But now, it also has the ring she wore on its chain.

It was wrapped with care. But there's no note inside.]

[ His surprised laugh cuts the rest of his thought off, and it's a moment before he can reign it in enough to go on. ]

[There's a bottle of amber liquid in a bag filled with tissue sitting on Jesse's doorstep. The liquid inside the bottle is butterbeer. A card is placed inside the bag with the battle and colored tissue paper.]

[There's no name, but there's a few smeared ink blotches that look like small pawprints, as though something was trying to scamper across.]

[ The sight of the card has a genuine smile sneaking onto Jesse's face— one that's sorely needed— and it isn't long before he's back inside shooting off a message to a certain someone. ]

Funny story: somebody left me a present by the front door today.

I said I wouldn't get you a rocket launcher for your birthday, but I got you something close to it. Consider it a late gift. Especially because it does work on hitting and stunning monsters.

[ Whenever he goes outside, he'll find a package on the doorstep. It's not wrapped up in any fancy way and it's tied with basic twine. There is an envelope on top of the box and small white card inside. The handwriting is probably familiar.

I know how much it killed you to lose our bet last night. Far be it from me to rub that in, but as a consolation I'm returning this little lady to you. It ain't a gift. It's in my own best interests to see that you are armed with the best. Besides, a man and his gun is a beautiful thing, and I am not one to break such an intimate bond. It was love at first sight if I recall. Anyway, use her wisely and try not to die next time. Who knew you'd be more of headache dead, than you are alive! Besides, I'm gonna be offended if someone other than me gets to it first next time. See you around. ~ E.

The box contains peacekeeper, completely cleaned and shiny. He can thank B.O.B. later for that. It also contains plenty of ammunition, likely more than he had been able to get his hands on before. He can thank her business for that. ]

[ Jesse half expects the package to explode when he sees the handwriting on the card. He handles it carefully, setting it aside in favor of reading the attached note; though he only gets as far as little lady before he’s scrambling to undo the wrapping.

Peacekeeper. He turns it over in his hands, fingers tracing all the familiar contours. She’s shinier and better-looking than she’s been in a long while, and he knows just who to thank for that. B.O.B. was the only one who had ever made her look better than Jesse could. That omnic is maybe the only other sentient being who knows the inner workings of the gun just as well as Jesse does.

He keeps a hand on Peacekeeper as he finishes the note, and then reads it a second time through. Ashe can say what she wants to the contrary, but it is a gift. He’d do just fine at whatever she has planned with a standard weapon, and they both know it. She could’ve kept Peacekeeper as collateral, could’ve held it over him as incentive.

Rather than point any of that out, he shoots off a quick text, short and sweet. ]

[ It's well past midnight, and she can't sleep. There is too much on her mind. She'd just gotten Chloe to drift off to sleep, and they are both in Ashe's master bedroom. She sitting up against a bunch of pillows, and though he can't see it, his serape is covering her lap. Try as she might, she's feeling agitated and stressed at this point. So what will make her feel better? Agitating him will work, and it's easier than saying she wants his attention. ]

[Reyes had lost people before, a lot of them. Casualties of war, accidents, suicide. It was part of being a soldier, part of serving and they couldn't save everyone. He'd lost good friends before, but in Overwatch, he managed to keep his very close friends alive. Near miss with McCree and losing that arm... scared the shit out of him.

So really, he was good at keeping his people alive. A point of pride. The Overwatch fell and everything went to shit, his people scattered, and Reyes had died. Reaper had been born, and he might have had attachment issues. By issues, he didn't form attachments. Not anymore.

Moira was his one and only real attachment he went anywhere with. She was his everything, his only friend, his only real ally, as close to family as he could manage these days. Moira put up with him. Moira was trying to help him.

Moira was now dead.]

[Professional courtesy the first message. On its heels, Reaper began to unravel. Why was he talking to McCree? He needed someone to talk to. Or maybe just someone to throw text messages at.

Ashe was less than impressed with October and it had only just begun. Perpetual night and it's creepy gothic atmosphere? No thanks. Of course that wasn't the only thing that was causing her stress recently. Her working partner, Shades, was under house arrest at home after having a crime he hadn't even committed pinned on him. The authority here was a mess, but at least they were gone for a month. However, it left her doing most of the work on her own. Luckily she was used to pulling the weight and it gave her something to keep her mind off other things. Mainly a certain cowboy.

August and September had been interesting to say the least. First there had been the party where they'd ended up making out, and that had stirred some things up. Despite denying anything outwardly, she knew that she'd let that one go on too long to be considered purely acting. Then again, he'd followed suit. That event had gotten a little easier to not think about as things grew crazy in the town and other more pressing matters took center stage. However, recently, they'd had a full night of alcohol induced emotional honesty and when she'd been sober later she hadn't entirely known how to process that. She'd damned near apologize and nearly forgiven everything in that raw moment. It wasn't that everything she'd said hadn't been the truth, but she felt conflicted by it. It was confusing to spend so many years under the firm belief that she wanted nothing from him. She'd begun to remember there had been a time she wanted so much from him.

Truth be told, she'd gone a bit quiet over the past couple of weeks. She'd tucked into work so that she didn't have to think about it too much. She wasn't trying to ice him out, she hadn't been silent with him or become mean again. It was just that fear had taken over in the morning and she'd withdrawn somewhat. Work had been an easy place to do it. Even then it was getting late and she was pouring over notes of incoming shipments and orders in the warehouse office that she'd laid claim too. With the world flipped over on it's head, she wanted to get these weapons out sooner. So there she was, pushing everything emotional to the side and doing what she did best, business.

It’s hard to tell what is even normal between him and Ashe anymore. The quiet and the distance is more like back home—and who’s to say that the last few months of frequent contact haven’t just been a weird anomaly?

That night at the bar had certainly been an anomaly. Jesse didn’t open up like that to anyone normally, drunk or sober. But just as surprising was how Ashe had opened up in return. It’d ultimately left him with more questions than answers. Put that together with the make-out session, and… yeah. It’s a whole lot of confusing. He has so much to ask, but in the light of day and without whiskey flowing through his veins, he’s not sure he feels up to asking them. Or hearing the answers.

Maybe he will be. Someday soon. But there are other things they need to discuss first: namely, Ashe’s little side hustle and his place in the mix. It’s also an excuse to check up on her that has nothing to do with their personal relationship. It’s familiar ground, even if it hasn’t been trod on in ages.

He raps a knuckle on her office door to give her a heads-up before he lets himself in, only the slightest flutter of something uncertain in his chest. Again, he reminds himself: this isn’t anything personal. This is work. This is something he knows like the back of his hand.

“Howdy.” He tips his hat in greeting, eyes already taking in the paperwork on her desk. "Busy?"
