[ She followed him outside, hardly surprised to see the shooting range that he'd set up for himself. Of course this is how he would utilize yard space. Why wouldn't he?

Not that she's one to talk. Her yard is home to a giant spider now, after all. Everyone has their quirks.

Moira rolls her eyes slightly at the memory, but there's the smallest smile that tugs at her lips regardless. ] I recall the headaches from the racket you'd make about it. [ Him. Particularly. Could Genji even make a racket???

Regardless, she doesn't seem to be following entirely, looking down at her scarred hand, the only real weapon she has. ]

You know I don't have anything that does damage to things that aren't alive, yes?

Yeah. I mean, I haven't really been any better about it - uh, minus the... drunk texts. Sorry about those, by the way.

[ She rubs the back of her neck again, rocking some on her heals. ]

But maybe you could get back into practice. It'd be cool to know more about you.

[ The sight of the card has a genuine smile sneaking onto Jesse's face— one that's sorely needed— and it isn't long before he's back inside shooting off a message to a certain someone. ]

Funny story: somebody left me a present by the front door today.

[ Jesse looks up from the gun in his hands without moving his head. With his hat on, it would have left half his face in shadow, all mysterious-like. Now, Moira can probably make out the full extent of his lopsided smile through the dark. ]

Yeah. I’m not so senile that I forgot already.

[ Which is why he holds the Peacekeeper out by the barrel, handle-first, for her to take.

It would appear to be a rather simple gesture, from the outside looking in. He and Moira know differently.

Still, his hand doesn't waver. ]

[ There's a muttered of course on the other end of the line as Jesse turns away to shake his head. He should've known. ]

[ Because he would take that as a compliment. A bigger outlaw than The Man With No Name? It's almost enough to make a guy blush. ]

[ Surprise would have put the reaction she had mildly. It might not have shown to an extreme on her face, but it was enough in the hesitation she showed and the way her eyes flicked from the gun to McCree’s face.

This could end up even more embarrassing than the time that Reyes tried to teach her how to use a firearm. She’s great with the physics side of it all, but there’s just something missing whenever she tries her hand at it. Mmmmmmph.

She reached out to take the Peacekeeper somewhat cautiously, scrunching her mouth up a bit as she looked at it. ]

[ Jesse waves her off, standing off to the side close enough to help if she needs it, but far enough not to be in her way. If having his weapon in the hands of an occasional enemy bothers him, he’s doing a good job not showing it. His expression is carefully neutral as he watches her. ]

It might do you some good, lettin’ off steam. Anything out there was made to be shot at, so it’s not like you can mess up much if you miss.

Don’t have to apologize to me about sendin’ off a drunk text or two. So long as you don’t make it a habit.

[ It’s one thing for him to have an unhealthy relationship with alcohol, another entirely to let it slide with Chloe. ]

But yeah. Same goes for you. Just be patient with me if I’m not so good at the whole… [ He gestures vaguely with his left hand, indicating the whole 'mutual socializing' thing. ]

You can’t hold that against me! Statute of limitations is up on anything I did as a kid.

[ Well, maybe not literally… starting a gang and running weapons on an international scale isn’t the same as a little graffiti or shoplifting. ]

Just trust me: I wouldn’t tell you not to do it if I hadn’t already figured out it was a bad idea.

[ It's not long after he discovers the gifts that Jesse attempts calling Chloe directly. He hasn't even gone back inside yet.

Even if she hadn't signed her name on all this, he'd have known it was her. ]

[ It's so nice that he knows her so well. She's sitting in a (thankfully empty) classroom when she flips on her FLUID with a grin. ]

I fail to find what makes this story funny, actually. Is this something humorous in the future?

Well, that aside, it's wonderful you got a present. I think you're quite deserving of one, although I can't say if there are particular reasons why you're receiving one or not. Wonderful nonetheless.

Of course I would, but we both already know I’m unkind.

[ To put it lightly. She’s still staring down at the gun, scrunching her mouth with some uncertainty, before she glances back at the targets. Does she even remember how to do this? She’s not completely sure. ]

It’s different than his shotguns. [ She knows she doesn’t have to clarify which “his” here. She still shifts so that she can face the homemade targets more effectively, lifting the gun and at least going to flip off the safety - look! She remembers! She can totally do this! Next is just cocking and pulling the trigger, right? Right. It’s not so—

She cringes visibly when the gun goes off though and only hits grass. This is bullshit. Who uses guns anymore, they’re useless. ]

[ He's smiling while he says it, disbelief and outright amusement clashing wildly as he tries to to keep a straight face. It's a moot point though. Especially after the pony starts nosing at his jeans. Nobody could not smile at that.

Jesse glances down, and there's a muffled whoa there as he tries to redirect the pony's attention. ]

[ Jesse lets out a surprised laugh. Has he ever played a game like that? At least, one where he didn’t lie through his teeth? ]

... Y’know what? Alright. Let’s do it when we get around to that movie night we got planned.

[ Assuming that old plan still stands. ]

Hey, pal, you holding up okay?

[ She grins at his laugh, visibly relaxing at it. ]

Cool. That sounds like a good idea.

[ Chloe pauses before she goes in to give him a tight hug. Sudden, maybe, but it doesn’t feel wrong. ]

Soon, okay? [ A lot of people she knows have been disappearing lately and she’s worried he’ll do the same before they can watch some stupid western. ]

[ It’s an almost embarrassing deer-in-headlights moment for Jesse, when Chloe hugs him. He’s not touch-averse at all, but… it’s just been a long time since a friend did that. Hell, they hadn’t even been so touchy-feely back in Blackwatch.

There’s a second or two that passes, his arms hesitating out on either side of her in a moment of indecision before he returns the hug.

Being a family man will never be in the cards for him, that much he’s sure of. A vigilante like him could never settle long enough. Jesse has known this for a long time. So he’d never expected to feel this particular sort of fond, protective rush of emotion that he does holding Chloe. Damn near paternal, though no one better dark say as much. ]

Yeah. Soon, I promise.
