Jesse lights the cigarillo as Ashe starts explaining. Once that’s done, then she has his full attention. He rests a hand on the top of the desk as he leans in to listen. If someone were to walk in just then, they’d be the perfect picture of two co-conspirators.
He shouldn’t be surprised that she’d gone straight for the criminal element, but it’s still unsettling just how involved she’s managed to get herself in such a short amount of time. He’d been aware of the Deerington underground, but had largely steered clear. He’d had to reason to engage. Now he’s thinking he should’ve paid more attention, if only to know just what it is that Ashe has gotten herself into.
“So you’re gonna get them ridin’ under your banner against the mayor, and whatever else is runnin’ this place.” It’s crazy. Foolhardy. Brilliant, in a twisted-morally-gray sort of way. That means it’s plenty familiar, too. Deadlock had done it. Blackwatch had done it, even if it had been for better reasons. Jesse leans back a little and turns his head to blow out a stream of smoke, expression pensive.
“This could work, or it could go south in a real bad way. What if they decide they don’t need a leader?” He looks back at her, brow furrowed with his frown. “And how deep into their dirty dealings are you gonna have to get to win ‘em over?”
